What we do
Veterans Helping Veterans
Vet 2 Vet Program
Through our Vet 2 Vet Program we offer a veteran-to-veteran mentoring program. While COI is primarily focused on serving the blind and visually impaired community the use and support of military veterans is crucial to the success of COI. In developing this program, we were unable to think of someone that would be better suited to help a struggling veteran other than a veteran whom has successfully shattered their own struggles. Through this program struggling veterans are paired up with a veteran that is dealing with or has successfully dealt with the same issue. This program provides a sponsor and mentoring approach for both veterans that extends beyond COI sponsored events. This program will be supported by the first of our Three R’s.
Successful completion of the Vet 2 Vet program will provide the opportunity for veterans to advance to the VMP program.
Visually Impaired Mentoring Program
Through our VMP Program we offer the blind and visually impaired an unbelievable mentoring opportunity with a specially selected veteran. This program offers a dual benefit by taking full advantage of the public servant and protector instincts of our veteran while offering a special bonding opportunity between two individuals in need. This program is not be viewed as a mentor/mentee relationship but instead as a mentor/mentor relationship as both individuals teach, learn, and are rehabilitated through the pairing. Each pairing is hand selected based on a thorough vetting and screening process to ensure that we pair like-minded individuals that are capable of achieving the goals of this program. This vetting process will coincide with the Vet 2 Vet Program.
Blind and visually impaired participants in this program learn how to become more independent as our veteran volunteers are instructed to assist but not complete tasks for our VMP participants. Veterans in this program are required to have completed a blind education training course and our Vet 2 Vet Program. This course has been specially developed by a blind, retired US Marine.
Each successful pairing in the VMP Program will be permitted to move forward to the VIO Program.
Visually Impaired Outdoors
Through our VIO Program we offer the blind and visually impaired exclusive hunting and fishing opportunities throughout the United States. Our goal with the VIO Program is to achieve our mission of offering a life-changing experience for our participants. Through this program our participants are paired up with a guide and videographer to help them along their way.
This program achieves the final of our Three R’s by successfully retraining and reacclimating our blind participants to their current lifestyle. Blind and visually impaired participants will be granted continued support and will have the opportunity to attend events of their choosing throughout the United States.
Participant attendance is restricted based on the event limitations.
